June 19, 2019In the News
(TechInAfrica): Africa’s online commerce, Jumia, supports women empowerment in Lagos, Nigeria through its Women & Youth Empowerment Program. The program provides training and support to young women and youth who seek to expand their source of income through e-commerce. Moreover, the program is also trying to bridge the unemployment among youth in Nigeria.
Jumia launched its pilot phase on June 14 at the Jumia Experience Centre in Yaba, Lagos. According to Juliet Anammah, CEO of Jumia Nigeria, the empowerment program is in line with the company’s efforts to improve Nigerians’ livelihood.
She noted that “when women are empowered, families are empowered too.”
Esther Olusanya, a full-time housewife and Omoboanle Ajala, a local tailor in Agege were among the participants who attended the program. Both of them agreed that the program was a good platform for women to make extra income in order to support their families.
Olusegun Martins, Jumia’s Head of Growth Marketing, was one of the program’s facilitator. He stated: beyond empowering women, the program has a long term goal of helping consumers understand how to benefit from online shopping, especially among rural dwellers.”
